Women and Computers

I am an undergraduate in the BYU Computer Science program and there are two or three girls in any high level cs course (junior or senior). There has been no outward discrimination. Everybody is different and has their own interests. Universities shouldn't worry about getting woman into a certain program, even if the numbers are low, they should brainstorm ways of getting more people into their program. Whether they be men or women it should not matter. Each person is different and has a different view to bring to the table.

  1. Now what if she were a black woman? No I'm kidding. But seriously, whenever there isn't controversy about race it always then goes to the sexes (or the other way around). I think all is well in the woman CS world.

  2. I agree that each person has individual talents and something unique to contribute to a field. However, there's no denying that there are aspects of computer science that deter women from entering the field. We face obstacles that aren't there for men. Although sometimes programs go too far in trying to attract women, I am a strong believer in removing these barriers for women. Perhaps universities should not worry so much about recruiting women into science, but shouldn't they consider why there are not more women in these fields? Computer science in particular is an excellent, flexible career for women who wish to be stay-at-home moms, and yet there are so few women in computer science. It is definitely something important to think about.

  3. There are subtle things guys do that are really discouraging. I have heard many jokes directed at me. Things like "You're a girl. Of course you got the job," or generally things that suggest it's somehow easier for me to get through this program. I'm sure you're not one of those guys. But acknowledge that even among your classmates, there are some people (both girls and guys) who do things to bring others down.
